How to operate a Marine Radio

Having a cell phone handy on the water offers an added measure of safety, but when emergencies arise, using a VHF-FM radio—not your cell phone—can mean the difference between life and death. Here’s why:

• If you make a distress call on your cell phone, only the party you call will be able to hear your pleas for help. VHF calls, however, can be received not only by the Coast Guard but also by other nearby vessels that may be able to render assistance.

All marine radio users, except those operating 27MHz maritime radio stations, must be qualified. A Certificate of Proficiency or Statement of Attainment shows that the holder has the skill to operate certain types of radios.

A licence can be achieved by simply studying the AMC VHF handbook online or by purchasing a hard copy of the workbook from Gold Coast Boat and Jet ski Licencing. On completion of the self study, it is recommended that students sit a practice quiz online through ACMA.
Once ready, simply book an assessment session which includes a 30 minute refresher session and a 25 question multi choice exam at the Gold Coast Boat and Jet ski Licencing office in Gold Coast City Marina. On completion of the exam, your exam is mailed to ACMA and your results will be mailed.
Costs for this licence are $150. This includes $83 payed to the University of Tasmania to manage your exam + $67 to cover assessment and postage costs.
